国际博物馆日定于每年的5月18日，是由国际博物馆协会（ICOM）发起并创立的。1977年5月28日，国际博物馆协会在前苏联莫斯科举行的第12届会员大会上通过关于“国际博物馆日”的决议。向全世界宣告1977年5月18日为第一个国际博物馆日，并每年为国际博物馆日确定活动主题。1978年—1991年的国际博物馆日没有设定主题，自1992年国际博物馆日开始设定主题。
    这一天世界各地博物馆都将举办各种宣传、纪念活动，庆祝自己的节日，让更多的人了解博物馆，更好地发挥博物馆的社会功能。

国际博物馆日主题：
    1992年：“博物馆与环境”（Museums and Environment）
    1993年：“博物馆与土著人”（Museums and Indigenous Peoples）
    1994年：“走进博物馆幕后”（Behind the Scenes in Museums）
    1995年：“反应与责任”（Response and Responsibility）
    1996年主题是： “收集今天 为了明天”（Collecting today for tomorrow）。
    1997年主题是：“与文物的非法贩运和交易行为进行斗争”(The fight against illicit traffic of cultural property)。
    1998年：“与文物的非法贩运和交易行为作斗争”（The Fight Against Illicit Traffic of Cultural Property）
    1999年：“发现的快乐”（Pleasures of Discovery）
    2000年：“致力于社会和平与和睦的博物馆”（Museums for Peace andHarmony in Society）

    2002年：“博物馆与全球化”（Museums and Globalisation）
    2003年：“博物馆与朋友”（Museums and Friends）
    2004年：“博物馆与无形遗产”（Museums and Intangible Heritage）

    2017年主题是：“博物馆与有争议的历史：博物馆难以言说的历史（Museums and contested histories: Saying the unspeakable in museums）”
